Berkeley Heights
Information
It is
believed the name Berkeley refers to Lord John Berkley, one of two
proprietors who jointly held all of New Jersey by grant. The township
owes its rural character to its late development. Until 1941, when the
American Telephone & Telegraph Company built its Bell Laboratories
research facility in the township, it was a sleepy farming and resort
community. Residents today are provided with a relatively low tax
burden, manicured playgrounds and many town facilities for both adults
and children. Camping and horseback riding are readily available at the
Watchung Reservation located just off the southern boundary of Berkeley
Heights. Residents have access to a highly ranked public school system,
where the students consistently score in the top 1% nationally in the
High School Proficiency Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.
Berkeley Heights is an affluent residential community with an easy
commute to Manhattan via excellent train & bus transportation. Newark
Liberty International Airport is a 20-minute drive away. Direct access
to Routes 24, I-78, I-287, I-280 connects Berkeley Heights to the major
metropolitan networks. |
